Transitioning your toddler from crib to a bed

Transitioning your toddler from crib to a bed

Making the move from a crib to a 'big bed' is a major milestone. While it’s exciting, it’s also important to approach this transition with careful planning to ensure it doesn't lead to a huge sleep regression.

Here are or top tips for the transition from a crib to a toddler bed:

Timing is Everything

Ideally, keep your child in their crib until they’re closer to 3 years old. At this age, they’re more likely to have developed the impulse control needed to stay in bed. Moving too early can lead to new sleep issues, as younger toddlers may struggle with the freedom that comes with a big bed. We have had a lot of clients come to us because their 2 year old is coming out of their room several times a night, or delaying bedtime for hours, so the longer you can wait - the better! However, if your child is climbing out of their crib and it has become unsafe, transitioning sooner might be necessary.

Get Sleep On Track Before You Transition

Before making the change, assess your child’s current sleep patterns. Is their night stretch of sleep solid? Are they sleeping through the night without frequent wakes? If not, the transition to a big bed might exacerbate existing sleep issues. It’s important to address any sleep challenges first. Get Them Involved

When your child is ready, make the transition an exciting and positive experience. Involve them in the process by letting them choose new bedsheets, pajamas, or even a special new sleep toy. This sense of ownership can make the move more appealing and help them feel more comfortable with the change.

Maintain Your Bedtime Routine

Consistency is key. Stick to your child’s familiar bedtime routine to provide comfort and security during the transition. Whether it’s reading a couple of books, singing a song, or having a long cuddle, keeping these rituals consistent will help them settle into their new bed more easily.

Childproof the Room (and Your House)

Safety is paramount. Ensure your child’s room is thoroughly childproofed, especially now that they have more freedom to move around. Secure any heavy furniture to the walls, remove potential hazards, and consider installing a toddler gate at their door so they're not able to roam the house while you're asleep. A floor bed or a toddler safe bed with rails can also be helpful to prevent falls during the night. Here are more tips on toddler sleep safety

Celebrate Success

Focus on the positives! Celebrate everything your child does well during this transition, no matter how small. Acknowledge their efforts and successes, and avoid dwelling on any initial sleep disruptions. By staying positive, you’ll help your child feel confident and happy about the change.

Avoid Highlighting the Negative

Try not to say, “No getting out of bed,” as this can inadvertently make them aware that leaving bed is an option. Instead, consider using a toddler clock that visually signals when it’s time to sleep and when it’s okay to get up. Keep the focus on reinforcing positive behaviours rather than drawing attention to the potential for negative ones.
